EXO’s Chanyeol Describes How His Experience With Bullying Shaped His Personality For The Worse

He’s trying to fix his bad habit.

EXO‘s Chanyeol and Sehun recently appeared on MBC FM4U’s Good Morning FM Jang Sung Kyu where Chanyeol opened up about his past experience with bullying and how that changed his personality.

On the show, Chanyeol explained the behind story of their newly released song, “Fly Away” (A.K.A “Wings”).

But the story was not what fans were hoping for.

Chanyeol shared that in contrast to his tall height now, he was quite short as a kid.

I’m 185 centimeters tall now, but I was short when I was little. When I was in middle school, I was so short that we had to fight about who was shorter.

– Chanyeol

He continued,

So my mother forced me to eat breakfast and I even jumped rope. And then in my senior year of middle school, I suddenly had a growth spurt.

– Chanyeol

Chanyeol elaborated that when he used to be small for his age, he suffered a lot of bullying, which led him to take on a bad habit

When I was little, I was small and undersized. As a result, I was bullied a lot. So I got in the habit of folding my wings (feeling dicouraged or dispirited).

– Chanyeol

And that’s why he titled the song the way he did.

‘Fly Away’ is a song about self-confidence. The message behind the song is ‘You can unfold your wings now.’

– Chanyeol

As a final message, Jang Sung Kyu asked Chanyeol to say a few words to the kids that used to bully him.

I hope you’re doing well.

– Chanyeol

Here’s hoping Chanyeol accomplishes his goal of “unfolding his wings” and keeps on slaying!

Because he truly deserves it.
