Japanese Breakfast‘s Michelle Zauner met BTS at the 64th GRAMMYs (also known as the 2022 GRAMMYs), and she opened up about what it was like to meet the superstar group.
Korean American Michelle Zauner is the lead vocalist and songwriter of Japanese Breakfast. She is also a director and the best-selling author of her memoir, Crying in H Mart.
Japanese Breakfast was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album at the 64th GRAMMYs, and Michelle Zauner attended the award ceremony in a gorgeous tiered yellow dress from Valentino‘s Haute Couture fall 2021 collection that made headlines.
Michelle Zauner chronicled her experience at the GRAMMYs in a 2022 GRAMMYs Diary for Pitchfork. In her diary, she called meeting BTS “the only thing I really care about accomplishing while I’m here.”
By the time she met BTS, Japanse Breakfast had already lost the two GRAMMYs they were nominated for. Michelle Zauner approached BTS after they performed “Butter” and took photos with Megan Thee Stallion. She asked them if she could take a photo with them in Korean, and they kindly agreed to take a photo with her.
I was like, ‘This is the only thing I really care about accomplishing while I’m here.’ I’d already lost my two GRAMMYs, so the best thing I could get of it was a photo with BTS. They came out after their performance and Megan Thee Stallion took a selfie with them. So I went up and I said, ‘Excuse me, can I get a photo with you?’ in Korean. And I think they were like, ‘Woah, this girl speaks Korean!’ They were really nice about it, and I got my photo.
Immediately after I posted the photo on Twitter, it just blew the f*ck up. I watched the numbers climb and I was like, ‘Woah, it’s been a minute and it has 10,000 likes,’ and now I think it has 500,000 likes. It was shared, like, 100,000 times. It’s wild. I’ve never experienced that before.
