BLACKPINK’s Jennie Goes Viral On Reddit For Funny Reason You Wouldn’t Expect

The post made it to Reddit’s main page.

Yesterday, BLACKPINK‘s Jennie went viral on Reddit, making it to the site’s main page—but the funny reason why is far from what you’d expect.

The BLACKPINK members are always attracting attention, whether it’s for their music, their visuals, or their popularity. However, it’s rare that any K-Pop artist makes it to the main page of Reddit—an American discussion forum with over 300 million active users.

The r/kpop subreddit has almost 700,000 users. | Reddit

That said, nothing could stop BLACKPINK’s Jennie from going viral over there. A post featuring Jennie amassed over 47,000 upvotes on the site yesterday, eventually getting featured on the site’s main page (known as r/all) for everyone to see.

But, unlike usual, it wasn’t her talent or fame that had everyone talking. In fact, the post technically wasn’t about Jennie at all—it was actually a Photoshopped image with her face and name in it. Uploaded to r/funny, the 35 million-user subreddit for humorous posts, the photo was designed to look like a yearbook photo with a very funny quote…

Of course, Jennie didn’t say “a lot of girls didn’t like me this year, but their boyfriends did” in her real high school yearbook. In fact, the yearbook from her time at ACG Parnell College in New Zealand doesn’t seem to have any quotes at all.

Even the image of Jennie itself was Photoshopped, created using a photo taken after she debuted. Eventually, the post was removed from the r/funny subreddit because it broke rules against reposting, suggesting the image had previously already gone viral on Reddit. However, by that time, tens of thousands of unsuspecting Redditors had already hit the upvote button.

Rest assured—the image may be Photoshopped, but BLACKPINK still got their promo in the thread. The top comment, with almost 3,000 upvotes, informed everyone that Jennie is a “singer in BLACKPINK“.

Of course, given how big BLACKPINK has become internationally, it’s no surprise that some Redditors already knew that. In a reply with 1,200 upvotes, one commenter revealed they “started listening to BLACKPINK ironically and then started listening to them unironically“. It seems that even those who look down on K-Pop are no match for BLACKPINK’s catchy tunes.
